Visa policy & Requirements
Know before you go
If you are a foreign national and plan on traveling to India for tourism, business, or other reasons, you will need a visa to enter the country. India has visa requirements in place for most foreign visitors, apart from those from countries that have established visa exemption agreements with India.
India has an eVisa program that allows travelers to apply for a visa online. The eVisa process can be done 100% online and takes a few minutes to fill out the form. The eVisa is received by email and must be printed to present it to the India immigration office on arrival.
Depending on your needs and the days you will be in India, you will have to choose one of the following visas
One-month e-Tourist visa
This has a duration of 30 days and is valid for double entry. The e-tourist visa India is not extendable nor convertible.
One-year e-Tourist visa
This lasts 365 days from the date of the granting of the ETA and allows multiple entries.
Five-year e-Tourist visa
This visa is valid for five years from the date of issue of the ETA and allows for multiple entries. Each visit may not exceed 90 days of continuous stay except for nationals of the USA, UK, Canada and Japan, who may extend their visit by 180 days.
To be eligible for this visa, you must:
Have a valid passport: The passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry into India.
Be vaccinated against yellow fever (if you are coming from a country endemic of the disease)
This has a maximum duration of one year from the date of its approval and can be used for multiple entries. However, you cannot stay more than 180 days in the country continuously. If the stay is going to last more than 180 days, you will have to request permission from the Regional Office for the Registration of Foreigners.
To be elegible for this visa you must meet the tourist visa requirements plus:
Be a person of assured financial standing
Sufficient proof of your financial standing and expertise in the field of intended business
Nationals of the following countries and territories holding ordinary passports can apply for an electronic visa (e-Visa) online:
European Union citizens
Antigua and Barbuda
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Papua New Guinea
Saint Kitts and Nevis
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Trinidad and Tobago
United Arab Emirates
Turks and Caicos Islands
Nationals of the following two countries do not need visas or passports to enter India, and may live and work in India without any limit of stay.
Also nationals of Maldives do not need a visa to enter India, for a maximum stay of 90 days.
India removed all COVID-19 restrictions for travelers, This means that travelers will no longer need to show a negative COVID-19 test result or vaccination certificate before entering the country.
However, the Indian government has said that it will continue to conduct random COVID-19 checks at airports. This means that travelers may still be asked to show a negative test result or vaccination certificate, even if they are not required to do so.
